Top Gun

22 10 2008

Thought I would post a few images I took on Tuesday morning , ( something a bit different ). Was lucky enough to go along on a helicopter ride around the Perth Airport to take photos of the airport and my works aircraft . Had to be at the airport for a 5 am take off on a Bell 206B Jetranger helicopter .  The flight was with an aircraft photographer , flight sim landscape designer and the Pilot . We had to wait till about 545 before taking off as there was a fair bit of cloud cover holding back the light . the helicopter had all the doors removed for the flight so you were basically looking over the edge with just a seat belt holding you in . Photographing from a helicopter is a bit different from what Im used to with landscape photography , had no tripod for one , plus had to compensate for camera shakes plus there was a fair bit of vibration from the helicopter . The flight last for about 45mins and we ranged in height from 300ft to 1000ft around the airport  and got around 150 images .

Will have some of my normal landscape images coming soon 🙂

Nice compilation of images Kirk.
Jet Rangers are a little old and shaky, need to get into a Eurocopter.

Great colour adjustments too, where did you pick up those techniques?

Thanks Thomas ,
Yeah wasnt the best helicopter we flew in but they had some beast of helicopters parked there
Didnt do to much to them just a bit of curves level and contrast plus a bit of dodging and burning .

Indeed nice compilations of images. I love photography and I never had a chance to try aircrafts as my theme. But before I can do that, I must have a good camera like yours. Keep posting and sharing your compilations. Good work!

I’m a plane geek as well and love these shots Kirk. Shooting from choppers is so much fun, I wrote a long blog post about it last year.
